Chapter 25

A Serious Discussion

The next morning, Liam, Oliver, and Newton arrived while Maddy and I were sitting in the crew lounge sipping our coffee. Oliver had made fresh blueberry muffins again. They were still warm, and we fell on them as though we hadn’t eaten for days.

Maddy hadn’t said anything about my nightmare this morning. Neither had I, although I was still unsettled by my encounter with the witch of the wreck. That uneasiness didn’t stop me from eating my share of the muffins though.

Newton split his third muffin in half and inhaled the fragrant steam. “Oliver, I don’t know where you learned to bake these, but you’ll have to give my chef the recipe. They’re superb.” He swallowed a small piece and then said, “And I think you should visit the pirates again this afternoon. Get to know them. Act like you want to be friends.”

Oliver chewed and swallowed a bite of his own muffin before he answered. “I’d already planned to. I think I can learn more about their plans if I befriend them. And I can say hi to my sister again while I’m there, but mostly I want to go because it gives me a chance to get up close to that mystery boat. I don’t like that nobody has shown themselves yet. Whoever it is, they must be up to something.”

“That could be true,” I said after a sip of coffee. “Someone was definitely aboard last night. It might have been a woman.” I told them about my late-night stroll on the deck and seeing Lily swimming to the mystery boat. “Someone welcomed her aboard. Maybe the boat belongs to the girlfriend one of the pirates, and she and Lily are friends. It could be the pirate only goes over there to sleep or when he has to move the boat. Maybe the rest of the time he spends on the Jolly Roger with his friends, and the girlfriend stays alone on the cabin cruiser. Or I guess it could have been a man who welcomed Lily. It was dark, and the boat is pretty far away.”

As a team, we hadn’t thought about the possibility that the two boats belonged to the same group until I said this. We spent a few minutes discussing the possibility, until Oliver chimed in, “I think we’re off base with this idea. Someone was definitely aboard when I went by yesterday. Remember, whoever it was, they shut the radio off. There’s someone on that boat, and whoever it is, they don’t want us to know who they are. And I can’t see Alec letting Lily visit one of those pirates alone, late at night. He’s way too possessive for that.”

Oliver continued. “It must be someone we know, or someone we’d recognize. Otherwise, why wouldn’t they show themselves?”

This was an insightful observation from Oliver. We all paused to see if we could think of anyone Alec wouldn’t mind Lily visiting alone at night. He was so jealous, we couldn’t think of a soul.
